Beijing has recruited 1,847 graduates so far this year to work as village officials in its countryside. Among them, students from Beijing make up 80 percent while 1027 of them are girls, according to Beijing's Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.
Beijing origially planned to recruit 1,600 college graduates to serve as village heads this year, but it turned out more than 20,000 applicants signed up to run for the jobs due to increased competition in the job market. The final enrollment ratio was 1 out of 12, much higher than that ratio of 1 out 6 during 2006 to 2008, Beijing Daily reported.
This year's recruitment follows on the heels of the first group of college graduates that were recruited as village officials in 2006 and who will soon finish their three year term of service.
The monthly salary for college graduates who work as village officials in the first year is around 2,000 yuan, 2500 yuan in the second year and 3,000 yuan in the third year.
